How is your Eye Tested

All eye tests are conducted by qualified and experienced ophthalmologists or optometrists. They assess your power of vision and your ability to focus on various objects and discern them properly. Every person should have regular eye tests since many eye diseases are asymptomatic. Eye tests can reveal blinding eye disorders, signs of tumours in the eyes, ocular manifestations of any type of systemic disease and even anomalies of the brain. The following types of eye tests are carried out by trained ophthalmologists to assess your eye condition.

  • External examination

  • Visual acuity

  • Colour vision

  • Stereopsis

  • Extraocular motilities

  • Visual field screening

  • Pupils and interpupillary distance

  • Visual field screening and near point of convergence

Eye defects are detected by several advanced techniques now. Some of them are listed hereunder.

  • Lensometry

  • Retinoscopy

  • Refraction and cycloplegic refraction

  • Slit lamp bio microscopy

  • Direct and indirect ophthalmoscopy

  • Tonometry

  • Gonioscopy

  • Ocular computed tomography, corneal and retinal tomography

  • Scanning laser polarimetry

Normally, the ophthalmologist conducts an external examination initially and then follows it up with specific tests according to the condition of the patient and the possibilities of actual ailment. In UK and several other countries, the normal visual acuity is expressed as 20/20, i.e., you can see an object at a distance of 20 feet as a normal object lying at 20 feet. If there is any difficulty in assessing the object at 20 feet or in assessing the distance, then you have an eye problem. In Europe and Australia, this 20/20 is expressed as 6/6, measuring the distance in meters.

The above problem is known as either short sight or long sight. If the eye problem is just a visual acuity, then it can be corrected by spectacles or contact lenses. Other eye disorders like cataract, tumours, etc. might require medication, surgery or other types of treatments. You can discuss with our specialists to learn all the details about eye disorders and eye tests.
